The latest leaks have revealed detailed information about the camera upgrades in the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, which are set to significantly enhance the user's shooting experience. The leaks indicate that both phones will feature a new camera system, bringing features like higher frame rate 4K video recording, a new spatial photo mode, noise reduction, and more.
Previous reports had suggested that the iPhone 16 Pro will adopt the iPhone 15 Pro's periscope 5x zoom lens. Currently, it is expected that both new Pro models will share the same overall camera system. The new leaks also revealed that the two Pro models will be able to shoot 3K video at 120 frames per second. This is a significant improvement compared to the iPhone 15 Pro series, but now 9to5mac has learned that the 120 fps rate will be boosted to 4K.
While Apple has been testing even further 8K video, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max seem to be skipping this technology. Notably, upcoming features include the ability to record ProRes 4K at 120fps when the iPhone is connected to an external storage device. This feature will be very useful for professional filmmakers, but the QuickTake upgrade will be more practical for everyone, as the resolution will be bumped from 1080p to 4K.
Beyond the video improvements, both Pro models will boast a range of other camera upgrades, including:
- A dedicated capture button integrated into the body, which can be used with third-party applications.
- Improved photographic styles, providing better skin tone representation.
- A new spatial photo mode, offering users a more immersive shooting experience.
- Automatic elimination of wind noise in videos, enhancing video recording quality.
- The ability to pause and resume video recording within the Camera app. This is a major upgrade for the Apple Camera app, which currently doesn't allow pausing during recording, eliminating the need to stop and restart filming.
In addition to the video improvements, this report confirms that Apple will support the JPEG-XL format, which can be used for both lossy and lossless compression.
These camera upgrades will officially be unveiled on September 9, 2024, at Apple's "It'sGlowtime" event, where the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be released.
