Apple has introduced a new feature in iOS 18 called "Repair Assistant," designed to streamline the process for iPhone users to configure replacement parts after repairs. This feature is compatible with genuine Apple parts, ensuring that iPhones repaired using Apple components function correctly and deliver their full capabilities.
"Repair Assistant" can configure various replaced parts, including displays, batteries, and more. For example, a replaced display can be configured through "Repair Assistant" to ensure TrueTone, auto-brightness, and other features function correctly. The battery configuration process ensures accurate battery health reporting.
Importantly, "Repair Assistant" can configure not only parts installed after iOS 18's release but also previously installed components. For instance, users who swapped their third-party battery for a genuine Apple battery can utilize "Repair Assistant" to recognize and configure the battery as an original Apple component.
After installing iOS 18, "Repair Assistant" will appear in the "About" section of the "Settings" app, under "Parts & Service" if you have components that can be configured. Users who haven't undergone a repair will not see this section.
Apple states that the "Repair Assistant" feature is compatible with iPhone 12 and later models. In April, Apple first mentioned the "Repair Assistant" functionality with its planned arrival in the fall, offering a convenient method for complete repair functionality with genuine Apple components.
As part of this change, Apple is also extending Activation Lock to iPhone parts, preventing the dismantling of stolen iPhones for component retrieval. This measure aims to further strengthen iPhone security and anti-theft capabilities.
