iPhone 16 Series Pre-Order Sales Fall Short of Expectations, Apple Faces Challenges
Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently released a report stating that the iPhone 16 series' pre-order sales over the first weekend fell short of expectations. Data indicates that the iPhone 16 series achieved approximately 37 million pre-orders, marking a 12.7% decline compared to the iPhone 15 series during the same period last year, failing to meet Apple's projections.
Kuo points out that the iPhone 16 Pro series experienced a significantly shorter lead time for shipments compared to the 15 Pro series. This is primarily attributed to Apple increasing its inventory ahead of pre-orders; however, it also reflects the lower-than-anticipated demand for the Pro series. He attributes this shortfall in Pro series sales to the unavailability of AppleIntelligence, Apple's key selling point, at the iPhone 16 launch, coupled with intensifying competition in the Chinese market, leading to a dip in iPhone demand.
It is noteworthy that the iPhone 16 Plus and iPhone 16 witnessed an increase in pre-order sales during the first weekend; however, this limited impact on the overall iPhone shipment volume.
Despite the lower-than-expected Pro series sales, Kuo suggests that the production plans of the supply chain will remain largely unchanged in the short term, affording Apple an opportunity to boost sales once AppleIntelligence becomes available and during subsequent peak-season promotions (China's Double Eleven). He emphasizes that if AppleIntelligence, slated for a Q4 2024 launch, and the Double Eleven promotions fail to significantly uplift iPhone 16 series sales, Apple will likely adopt a more aggressive product strategy in 2025 to revitalize market demand.
This revelation has sparked concerns regarding Apple's future product strategy. Although the iPhone 16 series pre-order sales fell short of expectations, Apple continues to boast a vast user base and potent brand influence. To retain its global dominance in the smartphone market, Apple must intensify efforts in product innovation, marketing, and competitive strategies.
