While some may consider the iPhone 16 series another year of incremental updates, many are excited about one feature in particular: the camera control button. This new feature is not just a hardware upgrade, it's a testament to Apple engineers' deep understanding of user experience and their pursuit of meticulous design.

After the "Its Glowtime" event in September, Johnie Manzari, Apple Human Interface Designer, and Rich Dinh, Senior Director of Product Design, sat down with DesignTangents to discuss the process of bringing the iPhone 16's new camera to life. The interview, which took place in Apple's podcast studio in Cupertino, focused largely on Apple's design philosophy and how the designers determined what made the cut and what didn't.

"I think there's this misconception sometimes that we have this secret ingredient when we're building these devices, when we're thinking about them, but we really don't," Dinh said. "We really start with the customer experience, not trying to make a new piece of hardware, not trying to make new software. Were really focused on how we can elevate the customer experience and the experience of using an iPhone."

The new camera control button on the iPhone 16 is a testament to this idea. Dinh pointed out that the button was designed to be fairly unobtrusive, flush with the device. In regular use, we wanted the phone to feel very similar to what youre used to holding and operating, but we added a little chamfer so, when its flush, when you half-press it and when you full-press it, it feels really good.

By designing a button that could detect both full and half presses, the designers realized they could take the fun of a dedicated camera button to the next level. The idea was that if you just kind of touch the button, it would signal to the phone that, hey, youre going to take a shot. It opened up all kinds of interesting new experiences we could design.

Mindfulness is another key element that Apple champions. The moment you press the camera button, the interface clears to make way for better composition. This intentional removal of distractions is what the design team is most excited about. Dinh noted, I might be biased towards more professional photographers, being able to control your zoom with your fingertips and having nothing on screen to obstruct your composition and what youre seeing. Youre taking a video of your family, your friends, your kids, and it feels like youre actually making a movie.

They also pointed out that the camera button wouldn't have been possible without extensive collaboration across the team. "It's all the work of the entire company, the sensor teams, getting that information to the architecture stack. Then on the design side, just thinking about how would pros do this? How would they do the ramp? Then stitching all that together, Manzari said. "Againhopefully people dont have to think about it. They just get the video of their friends and family that they want, but it really is built on deep collaboration across the entire company.

From design philosophy to technical implementation to user experience, the iPhone 16s camera control button showcases Apples dedication to meticulous product details and a deep understanding of user needs. It is not merely a simple hardware upgrade but a manifestation of Apple engineers' constant exploration and pursuit of exceptional user experiences.
