At the MetaConnect2024 press conference, Meta announced the price and release date of its entry-level VR headset, the Quest 3S. This headset, priced at a mere $300, will be available for purchase starting October 15th and will launch alongside the game "Batman: Arkham Shadow" on October 22nd. Meta's current VR headset lineup is as follows:
- Quest 3S 128GB: $299.99
- Quest 3S 256GB: $399.99
- Quest 3 512GB: $499.99
It's noteworthy that Meta has reduced the price of the Quest 3 512GB from last year's $650 to $499.99, bringing it in line with the price of the 128GB Quest 3S. The 128GB Quest 3 is now priced at $429.99 and will be discontinued once sold out. Additionally, the Quest 2 and Quest Pro will no longer be stocked, with Meta planning to clear out existing inventory by the end of the year.
The Quest 3S and Quest 3 utilize the same SoC and hand controllers, resulting in nearly identical overall gaming experiences. However, the Quest 3S features a single-eye resolution of 1832x1920, the same as the older Quest 2, which falls short of the Quest 3 released a year ago. It also boasts a slightly smaller field of view compared to the Quest 3. To keep costs down, the Quest 3S employs traditional Fresnel lenses, surprisingly leading to longer battery life. This is because the Quest 3's Pancake lenses suffer from greater brightness loss, forcing the display to consume more power to compensate for the reduced brightness.
Reports from the event indicate that media attendees didn't perceive any significant shortfalls in resolution or field of view with the Quest 3S. The new Y-shaped headstrap offers a comfortable experience, as observed during a half-hour trial. Unlike the Quest 3, which requires tapping the outer shell, the Quest 3S features a dedicated passthrough button that allows users to quickly switch between the virtual and real world. The Quest 3S also supports color passthrough.
Meta asserts that the Quest 3S is the ideal VR headset for enthusiasts and gamers. It provides an immersive virtual world experience at a price significantly lower than competing offerings.
