Could Android 16 Be Released Earlier? Google May Launch New System in Q2 Next Year
Google typically releases a new version of Android every year, and since 2013, all releases have fallen between August and November. However, with the release of Android 16, that might change. While Android 15 is expected to start rolling out to supported Pixel models on October 15th, Google appears to be considering releasing Android 16 earlier than usual - possibly sometime in the second quarter of next year, between April and June.
This would be a significant shift in product strategy. Google also moved its hardware launch this year from the usual October to August, resulting in the odd situation of the new Pixels launching with Android 14 because Android 15 wasn't ready. If Android 16 arrives by the end of June next year, and Google sticks to an August hardware launch, it would mean the Pixel 10 series could ship with Android 16 without any issues.
The news about Android 16 being released in Q2 comes from Google's Android 15 Compatibility Definition Document for developers, as well as several patches to the Android open-source project, all mentioning significant changes to be pushed in "25Q2" or "25Q2/AndroidW." W is the letter following V in the alphabet, and Android 15's codename is "VanillaIceCream", so W is likely the codename for Android 16 (it seems Google recently decided to skip a few letters and named it "baklava", a Turkish dessert).
Of course, these are just hints, and nothing is confirmed yet. Even then, things could change - both Android 15 and Android 14 were delayed due to last-minute issues, so Android 16 could also be affected.
