Vivo Still First? Domestic Smartphone Market Q3 Sees Major Reshuffle, Xiaomi Overtakes Huawei!
On October 8th, the digital industry was abuzz with discussions about Vivo's potential to retain its top spot in the domestic smartphone market for the fourth consecutive year. With Vivo consistently holding the lead throughout the first three quarters, the market generally anticipated its continued dominance. However, a report from Wall Street Journal citing supply chain sources introduced a twist: in the third quarter of 2024, Vivo and iQOO combined claimed the top spot.
On October 9th, industry insider "Wisdom Chip Guide" finally unveiled the mystery, releasing data for the domestic smartphone market in Q3 2024. While he acknowledged potential minor adjustments in official figures, he confirmed the overall trends to be accurate.
According to "Wisdom Chip Guide," Vivo (including iQOO) topped the domestic smartphone market in Q3 with a combined market share of 18.9%, with Vivo accounting for 13.7% and iQOO for 5.1%. Following behind was Huawei Group, with a combined share of 18.1% (Huawei 15.6%, Huawei Smart Selection 2.5%). Xiaomi secured third place with a market share of 15.8%, followed by OPPO Group (15.6%: OPPO 12.7%, OnePlus and Realme both 1.4%). Rounding out the top six were Honor (15.0%) and Apple (12.7%).
However, this ranking isn't entirely aligned with conventional standards, as it includes Huawei Smart Selection and Realme within Huawei and OPPO groups, respectively. By standard ranking, Vivo still holds the top spot with 18.9% market share, consistent with Wall Street Journal's earlier report.
But an unexpected shift occurred in second place: Xiaomi, with a market share of 15.8%, surpassed Huawei to become the second-largest brand in China. Huawei followed closely in third with 15.6%, trailed by Honor (15.0%) and OPPO (14.1%). Apple remained in sixth place.
This signifies a forceful surge by Xiaomi in the third quarter, taking the number two spot in the domestic smartphone market - a development that likely caught everyone by surprise.
Looking at conventional market share figures, Vivo boasts a significant lead, while Xiaomi, Huawei, and Honor are positioned in a similar tier, with less noticeable distinctions between them. OPPO's market share, on the other hand, is relatively lower.
Competition in Q4 2024 is set to be incredibly fierce as all major brands gear up to launch their latest flagship models. Alongside the iPhone 16 series, domestic brands have lined up multiple new releases, with pre-launch hype already in full swing. Releases are scheduled to begin on the 14th.
Hence, the crucial factor in determining whether this year's smartphone market sees major changes lies in the performance of each brand in Q4. Can Xiaomi maintain its strong momentum and further widen its lead? Can Huawei reclaim its second-place position? Can OPPO bridge the gap? These are all burning questions that will shape the future of the landscape.
The coming months promise an intense battle for supremacy in the Chinese smartphone market. It's a showdown we'll all be watching closely to see who emerges victorious.
