Apple's "Tap to Pay" Expands to Five European Countries, Offering a Smoother Payment Experience
Apple has announced that its "Tap to Pay" feature on iPhone is now available in five additional European countries: Austria, Czech Republic, Ireland, Romania, and Sweden. The feature, initially launched in the US in 2022, allows iPhone users in the US to make payments to other iPhone users without any additional hardware. It subsequently expanded to other regions, including the UK (2023) and France and Japan (May 2024).
In a statement, Apple said that payment platforms Adyen, SumUp, and Viva.com support "Tap to Pay" in all five new countries. Stripe supports the feature in all countries except Romania. Currently, a total of 14 payment platforms support this feature. Users can make payments using contactless credit and debit cards from providers like Visa, American Express, Discover, and Mastercard.
Jennifer Bailey, Apple's Vice President of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, said: "As more consumers embrace digital wallets and cards for payments, Tap to Pay on iPhone offers businesses a secure, private, and easy way to accept contactless payments, unlocking a new checkout experience using the power, security, and convenience of iPhone."
The expansion of "Tap to Pay" will offer a more convenient payment experience for iPhone users in Europe. Users simply need to hold their iPhone near a contactless POS terminal to complete a payment. The feature eliminates the need to open an app or enter a passcode, enabling payments with just a single tap.
Apple stated that "Tap to Pay" will roll out to the five new countries over the coming weeks. This further pushes the adoption of contactless payments, offering consumers and businesses a more convenient and secure payment experience.
