According to a report by South Korea's ETNews, citing an industry source, all four iPhone 17 models slated for release next year will feature a low-power LTPO display. While the report doesn't explicitly state it, the use of LTPO technology suggests that the entire iPhone 17 lineup will adopt a ProMotion display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

ProMotion, which debuted on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max in 2021, has been limited to Pro models. Therefore, the expansion of this feature to the iPhone 17 and the rumored "iPhone 17 Air" is noteworthy. The report also mentions that Samsung and LG will supply LTPO displays for all iPhone 17 models.

LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) is a low-power backplane technology used in OLED displays that enables variable refresh rates while reducing power consumption. This ensures that ProMotion doesn't significantly impact battery life. Displays with ProMotion technology make scrolling and video content appear smoother on iPhones.

ProMotion also allows the iPhone 17 and "iPhone 17 Air" displays to lower their refresh rates to even more power-efficient levels. While iPhone 13 Pro models can drop to 10Hz, iPhone 14 Pro through iPhone 16 Pro models can go as low as 1Hz, enabling an always-on display feature that showcases various lock screen elements even when the device is locked. It remains unclear whether the iPhone 17 and "iPhone 17 Air" will drop to 10Hz or 1Hz.

Ross Young, CEO of DisplaySupplyChainConsultants, previously stated that the iPhone 17 and "iPhone 17 Air" would likely support ProMotion. Rumors of the feature expanding to the entire iPhone 17 lineup have also been circulating for some time. The standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus remain equipped with 60Hz displays.

Apple is expected to release the iPhone 17 series in September 2025. If the above rumors prove true, the iPhone 17 lineup would be the first generation of standard iPhones to feature ProMotion displays. This would further enhance the appeal of the standard iPhones and differentiate them from the Pro models..

Of course, all of this information is still based on rumors, and the final outcome will depend on official confirmation from Apple. However, based on current developments, the iPhone 17 series is poised for significant upgrades in the display department.
