Apple announced on its website that it will open the iPhone's NFC chip to developers, allowing them to use the secure element for contactless data exchange within their own apps. Starting with the upcoming iOS 18.1 release, developers will be able to use this component, but initially, it will only be available to developers in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, the UK, and the US. Notably, the announcement didn't mention the EU, which has been one of the most vocal regions in pushing for Apple to open up its NFC capabilities. The timeframe for China's availability was also not mentioned.

For a long time, Apple has been cautious about opening its NFC chip to developers due to security concerns. However, this opening is not entirely unexpected, as the EU has been pressuring Apple with anti-monopoly regulations.

According to Apple, the NFC opening can be used for in-store payments, car keys, closed-loop transit, corporate ID cards, student IDs, home keys, hotel keys, merchant loyalty and reward cards, and even event tickets. Just the building access cards and car keys alone could significantly improve the everyday experience for iPhone users.

For developers, the opening of the NFC chip means they can utilize this technology to create richer application scenarios and provide more convenient user experiences.
