Qualcomm's self-developed Oryon CPU core is about to make its debut in the smartphone market, marking a new transformation in the mobile chip industry. A leaked datasheet reveals that the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip comes in two variants: SM8750 and SM8750P. The "P" likely stands for "Performance," similar to the "AC" variants we've seen in previous Snapdragon chips.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is built on a 3nm process node, moving below 4nm and expected to be manufactured by TSMC. Based on Geekbench test results, the CPU will employ a 2+6 configuration, although it's still unclear whether it will be eight Oryon cores or two Oryon cores alongside six Cortex cores. Unlike the Snapdragon X chips targeted at laptops, the 8 Gen 4 chip must adhere to the thermal and power constraints of portable devices.

Regardless of the configuration, the 4th generation chip boasts a 35% improvement in single-core performance and a 30% increase in multi-core performance compared to its predecessor. It's important to note that these test results are from early Geekbench testing and could still see further improvements.

Beyond the CPU enhancements, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will feature the new Qualcomm Adreno 8 series of graphics processors, offering significant performance and efficiency gains over the 7 series. Additionally, the chip will support four-channel LPDDR5X memory.

A noteworthy concept, dubbed the "Low Power AI" (LPAI) subsystem, is mentioned in the datasheet. It's designed for always-on use, including audio, camera, and sensor tracking. Naturally, the device will also be equipped with a powerful NPU while active.

In terms of communication, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will support mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G (Rel.17), Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be), Bluetooth 5.4, and UWB (FastConnect7900).

Multiple phone brands are currently working on flagship devices powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. However, Xiaomi is rumored to be the first to launch a phone with the new chip. This would be the Xiaomi 15 series, expected to debut in October, closely following the 8 Gen 4 chipset itself (officially scheduled for launch in October).

The emergence of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 signifies not only Qualcomm's continuous innovation in the mobile chip space but also a new level of performance breakthroughs and feature upgrades for the smartphone market. Smartphones equipped with this chip are expected to deliver substantial enhancements in performance, power consumption, and functionality, providing users with a smoother, more efficient, and intelligent mobile experience.
