According to TheElec, a South Korean media outlet, Apple plans to expand the use of its Tetraprism telephoto lens, previously exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, to both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max this year. The report states that Apple will continue to rely on LG Innotek for the initial batches of the folded zoom modules.
The quadruple-reflecting prism telephoto lens utilizes a folded glass design, a technology also referred to as "Tetraprism" by Apple. This design uses four reflections to extend the light path, achieving a longer 120mm focal length while maintaining the same space. This enables both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max to offer 5x optical zoom and 25x digital zoom.
In addition to adopting the quadruple-reflecting prism telephoto lens, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will also feature a 3D sensor-shift optical image stabilization technology on their telephoto lenses. This technology allows for displacement in all three directions, enabling twice the micro-adjustment compared to previous models, resulting in sharper photos even at maximum zoom levels.
It is understood that after the initial stock is depleted (around Q4), Apple will transition to its secondary suppliers, Foxconn and Goertek, for the production of the folded zoom modules to reduce costs. Meanwhile, Sharp is not expected to supply any camera modules for iPhones released this year.
The incorporation of the quadruple-reflecting prism telephoto lens will further enhance the photographic capabilities of the iPhone 16 Pro series, providing users with a superior shooting experience.
