Under-Display Camera Technology Breakthrough: 2K Full-Area High-Resolution Under-Display Front Camera Solution Coming Soon, True Full-Screen Era is on the Horizon!

In recent years, smartphone manufacturers have been constantly pushing boundaries in areas like battery life, performance, and imaging. However, progress on under-display camera technology, essential for achieving true full-screen displays, has been relatively slow. This is because the front-facing camera, to some extent, restricts the implementation of full-screen designs, and under-display camera technology has become the key to solving this problem. However, achieving high-resolution under-display cameras presents numerous challenges: ensuring the screen's display effect is not affected while guaranteeing selfie quality doesn't decline.

Recently, digital blogger @DigitalChatStation brought exciting news: a 1.5K full-area high-resolution under-display camera solution has been conquered, and manufacturers are now tackling the more challenging 2K under-display camera technology. Currently, a deep four-curved screen + dual-hole front camera DEMO has been sampled and supports ultrasonic screen fingerprint recognition.

Currently, under-display camera technology primarily utilizes the self-illumination and transparency characteristics of OLED screens. It also requires reducing the pixel density of the translucent area to enhance light transmission and improve the image quality of the front camera. However, when screen resolution increases, the screen's pixel density also increases, leading to a decrease in the amount of light entering the translucent area, affecting the image quality of the front camera.

The emergence of 1.5K and even 2K resolution under-display camera solutions signifies that smartphone manufacturers have found a balance point between pixel density and selfie quality. It is reported that the 1.5K resolution under-display camera solution, upon mass production, will be first used by Nubia Z70 Ultra, followed by Red Magic's 8Gen4 models. Regarding the 2K resolution full-screen, speculation suggests it will be first implemented by Xiaomi MIX5 or Huawei.

In June this year, @DigitalChatStation revealed the configuration information of a new laboratory scheme device. This device is said to adopt "full-area high-resolution under-display camera + removal of the pressure bar for the ultimate BM black border + Unibody full-ceramic body." While the official production date remains uncertain, it has potential to be the Xiaomi MIX5.

Back in 2021, an image of a Huawei "full-screen" phone was leaked online. The phone featured a quad-curved screen, a rectangular rear quad-camera DECO, and a well-controlled body thickness. Currently, more information about this new phone remains unconfirmed.

2K resolution places higher demands on screen material, light transmission, and image processing algorithms, making its implementation more challenging. However, once achieved, 2K under-display cameras will deliver a more refined and realistic display and selfie experience for users, further driving the development of "true full-screen" phones.

Based on current leaks, new phones with under-display cameras are expected to debut as early as next year. For consumers who love full-screen phones, it's worth patiently waiting. Soon, we can expect to experience truly full-screen smartphones.
