According to media reports, Apple will completely abandon the use of LCD on iPhones and has begun ordering OLED displays from BOE and LG for the next generation iPhone SE. This signifies the complete withdrawal of LCD screens from the iPhone stage, as Apple fully embraces OLED technology.

BOE's securities department staff stated that in the first half of the year, their Rongxin OLED shipments exceeded 65 million units, representing a year-on-year growth exceeding 25%. While they declined to comment on specific cooperation information for individual clients, they also indicated that increased demand is undoubtedly beneficial for the entire industry if end users adopt OLED technology.

Public information reveals that in 2017, Apple launched its first OLED-equipped model, the iPhone X, after which LCD screens were only used in entry-level models like the iPhone XR, iPhone 11, and iPhone SE3. However, starting with the iPhone 12 series in 2020, Apple has equipped all its models with OLED displays. With the iPhone SE4 embracing OLED next year, LCD will fully exit the iPhone stage.

In preparation for the iPhone SE4, Apple has begun sourcing OLED screens from Chinese panel giant BOE and South Korea's LG. Omdia, a UK market research firm, predicts that OLED smartphone shipments will surpass LCD shipments for the first time this year. As iPads and other products begin adopting advanced OLED screens, Apple is expected to further reduce its LCD procurement.

Apple's decision to fully embrace OLED signifies that OLED technology will become the mainstream choice for smartphone displays in the coming years. This shift brings several advantages:

  • Superior Image Quality: OLED screens offer higher contrast ratios, wider color gamuts, and faster response times, delivering more vibrant and realistic visuals.

  • Enhanced Energy Efficiency: OLED screens can automatically adjust brightness based on displayed content, reducing power consumption.
  • Slimmer Design: OLED screens are thinner than LCD screens, allowing for slimmer and lighter phones.
  • More Design Possibilities: The characteristics of OLED screens enable more flexible screen designs, such as curved and foldable displays.

Apple's embrace of OLED will also have a profound impact on the display industry. As OLED technology continues to advance and its applications expand, OLED screens will become standard in smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other electronic devices, while LCD screens will gradually fade into history.
