iPhone 16 Pro Max Features a Metal Battery Enclosure for the First Time: Improved Heat Dissipation, but Adds Weight
Apple is set to officially ship the iPhone 16 Pro Max and other models on September 20th, but some insiders have already received the high-end flagship. As a result, we have our first look at the battery powering it. As previously leaked, the battery is covered in a steel enclosure - a first for the company - which will significantly improve heat dissipation.
Two images, one of the iPhone 16 Pro Max and the other of the iPhone 16 Plus, were posted on the personal page of MajinBu. However, as shown in the image below, the non-Pro models do not feature a metal enclosure for the battery. This suggests that only the more expensive models will have the metal enclosure this year, a strange contrast since we previously reported leaks about the base iPhone 16 having a multi-layer protection layer for the battery, suggesting that all models would have this internal change.
The biggest benefit of adding the metal enclosure for the iPhone 16 Pro Max battery is better heat dissipation. Apple may have introduced this change to also comply with EU regulations for easier battery replacement. However, the addition of this enclosure comes with some drawbacks; the first being an increase in weight. While the difference in weight may not seem significant on paper, as steel is heavier than aluminum, the added weight could be noticeable when carrying the iPhone 16 Pro Max on a daily basis.
The internal changes for the iPhone 16 Pro Max essentially confirm that the iPhone 16 Pro will also feature a metal battery enclosure, as we previously reported about prototype batteries using this same material a few months before launch. Hopefully, next year, Apple will unify this feature across the entire iPhone 17 lineup.
