Pre-orders for the iPhone 16 series have begun, and recent reports suggest that pre-order numbers for the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max are lower than their predecessors, while the standard iPhone 16 and 16 Plus are seeing higher demand. These phones are expected to hit shelves on September 20th. Now, according to a report by MacMagazine, a regulatory filing in Brazil indicates that the iPhone 16 is currently being assembled in Brazil, China, and India.
In Brazil, the iPhone 16 is being assembled at a Foxconn factory in Joinville, Santa Catarina. This is not the first time Apple has used a Brazilian factory to assemble iPhones, but it will be the first time a newly launched iPhone will be assembled in Brazil from day one. Notably, Apple will only be assembling the standard iPhone 16 models in Brazil, while the more expensive models will be imported from China.
Last year, Apple began assembling iPhone 15 and 15 Plus models in India simultaneously with China, marking the first time India assembled a new-generation iPhone. This year, the Foxconn factory in Tamil Nadu, India, will once again be assembling the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models for the first time.
Apple's expansion of its production lines to Brazil and India might be a strategic move to reduce reliance on Chinese production and distribution. The company also has assembly facilities in Vietnam.
This year's iPhone 16 series offers only incremental upgrades compared to previous generations (which could be a reason for the lower Pro model sales). All iPhone 16 models feature a dedicated camera shutter button. The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus can shoot spatial videos with a horizontal camera module, while the Pro models offer the same camera set and 5x optical zoom. The iPhone 16 series also supports 45W fast charging, although it was not mentioned in the keynote.
A downside for this year's iPhones is that out-of-warranty battery replacements for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will cost more in the US.
