Recently, renowned teardown team iFixit disassembled Apple's latest flagship phone, the iPhone 16, and dubbed it "the most repairable iPhone yet". iFixit discovered that the iPhone 16 utilizes a novel "adhesive glue" for battery fixation. This glue detaches upon the passage of a small amount of electricity, allowing repair technicians to easily remove the battery. This new approach is more user-friendly compared to Apple's previous use of pull-tabs, making battery replacements faster and easier.
However, despite the simplified battery repair process, iFixit also observed that the newly-introduced camera control buttons on the iPhone 16 are laser-welded onto the phone's frame. This means that if the camera control buttons are damaged, the entire phone frame needs to be replaced, resulting in a high repair cost.
To ascertain specific repair prices, PChome contacted Apple's official customer support. For a 128GB iPhone 16 Pro with a damaged camera control button, Apple's customer support replied that the camera control button is part of the rear camera system and replacing it would cost 1949 yuan.
The progress made in battery repair on the iPhone 16 is undoubtedly positive for users. However, the issue of the camera control button's repair cost is a cause for concern. If users accidentally damage this button, they will face steep repair expenses. Its hoped that Apple will improve the design of future models, reducing the difficulty of repairing the camera control buttons and providing users with more convenient repair services.
