The Analysis Report on China's Mobile Phone Market Operation in August 2024 released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) shows that domestic mobile phone shipments reached 24.047 million units in August, representing a year-on-year increase of 26.7%. Among them, 5G phone shipments reached 19.754 million units, a year-on-year increase of 26.3%, accounting for 82.1% of total phone shipments during the same period, further solidifying the dominant position of 5G phones in the domestic market.
Report data shows that from January to August 2024, the domestic mobile phone market shipped a total of 195 million units, a year-on-year increase of 16.6%, of which 5G phone shipments reached 165 million units, a year-on-year increase of 23.9%, accounting for 84.5% of total phone shipments during the same period, demonstrating strong market vitality.
In terms of new model launches, 47 new mobile phone models were launched in the domestic market in August 2024, a year-on-year decrease of 14.5%, of which 29 were 5G phones, a year-on-year decrease of 3.3%, accounting for 61.7% of the total number of new models launched during the same period. From January to August 2024, a total of 281 new mobile phone models were launched in the domestic market, a year-on-year decrease of 4.1%, of which 151 were 5G phones, a year-on-year increase of 13.5%, accounting for 53.7% of the total number of new models launched during the same period.
It is noteworthy that domestic brands continue to dominate the domestic market. In August 2024, domestic brand mobile phone shipments reached 22.178 million units, a year-on-year increase of 31.7%, accounting for 92.2% of total phone shipments during the same period. Forty new models were launched, a year-on-year decrease of 14.9%, accounting for 85.1% of the total number of new models launched during the same period. Smartphones also maintained a growth trend. In August 2024, smartphone shipments reached 21.098 million units, a year-on-year increase of 17.7%, accounting for 87.7% of total phone shipments during the same period. Thirty-three new models were launched, a year-on-year decrease of 28.3%, accounting for 70.2% of the total number of new models launched during the same period. From January to August 2024, smartphone shipments reached 182 million units, a year-on-year increase of 14.1%, accounting for 93.4% of total phone shipments during the same period, and 200 new models were launched, a year-on-year decrease of 19.0%, accounting for 71.2% of the total number of new models launched during the same period.
