According to the latest data from market research firm IDC, global smartphone shipments reached 316.1 million units in the third quarter of 2024, marking a 4.0% year-on-year increase and extending the growth streak to five consecutive quarters. This data showcases the resilience of the smartphone market amidst global economic headwinds, with Chinese manufacturers' strong growth emerging as the primary driving force.

IDC's report reveals that the robust performance of Chinese vendors like vivo, OPPO, Xiaomi, Lenovo, and Huawei fueled the overall growth in the global smartphone market. Notably, vivo's aggressive product launch strategy and a lower base number contributed to a particularly impressive performance this quarter.

It's crucial to note that the growth isn't uniform across all manufacturers. While some companies face elevated bill of materials (BOM) costs, others benefit from favorable exchange rates in emerging markets like Southeast Asia.

"Chinese smartphone vendors' growth in emerging markets has been a consistent theme this year," commented IDC's senior research manager. They have effectively captured the strong demand for smartphones in these markets, winning over consumers with competitive pricing and customized product strategies.

Beyond the strong performance of Chinese vendors, Apple also witnessed a 3.5% year-on-year increase in shipments during the quarter. Fueled by strong demand for previous models and the launch of the new iPhone 16 series, Apple's global market share has steadily climbed. Notably, earlier iPhone models such as the iPhone 15 performed exceptionally well, driven by robust promotional and marketing campaigns surrounding Apple Intelligence.

Despite a slight decline in overall shipments, Samsung retained its market leadership. The company's Galaxy AI-powered lineup, coupled with the introduction of the new Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6, has led to continuous growth in Samsung's high-end market share.
