The latest Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition from Samsung boasts significant improvements in hinge design compared to the Galaxy Z Fold6. It features a more robust hinge with an increased number of parts, enhancing durability. According to TheElec, while the Fold6 hinge has approximately 60 to 70 parts, the Special Edition has 130 to 140 parts, supplied by South Korean manufacturer KHVatec.
To enhance durability, Samsung has added more parts to the hinge to ensure consistent support for the device. While the Special Edition doesn't adopt the previously rumored etched ultra-thin glass (UTG), it still uses the same UTG window found in the Fold6. Samsung and Apple are still exploring this technology for future foldable phones.
The Special Edition also includes some other material upgrades. For example, it features a titanium alloy backplate, unlike the traditional Fold models, which use carbon fiber-reinforced plastic to prevent SPen interference. Since the Special Edition doesn't support the stylus, Samsung opted for titanium.
Furthermore, the Special Edition comes equipped with a 200MP wide-angle camera provided by Samsung Electro-Mechanics. When folded, the Special Edition measures 10.6mm in thickness, compared to the Fold6's 12.1mm, showcasing Samsung's efforts in reducing device thickness.
Here's a summary of the key differences between the Special Edition and Fold6:
Fold Special Edition:
- Hinge part count: 130 to 140
- Hinge supplier: KHVatec
- Ultra-thin glass (UTG): Same as Fold6
- Backplate: Titanium alloy
- Camera: 200MP wide-angle camera
- Thickness: 10.6mm (folded)
Fold6:
- Hinge part count: 60 to 70
- Hinge supplier: Unknown
- Ultra-thin glass (UTG): Same as Special Edition
- Backplate: Carbon fiber-reinforced plastic
- Camera: Unknown
- Thickness: 12.1mm (folded)
Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition represents a significant upgrade in hinge design, material selection, and body thickness, demonstrating Samsung's continuous innovations in foldable phone technology. As technology continues to evolve, foldable phones are expected to become even lighter, thinner, and more durable in the future.
