Technology media outlet 404media yesterday published a report from the Detroit, Michigan law enforcement department, stating that new security measures added in iOS18 have resulted in iPhones spontaneously restarting into an unlocked state during digital forensics, making the process more difficult. The report highlights that iPhones undergoing examination in forensic labs are frequently restarting, particularly noticeable when the iPhone is disconnected from cellular networks.

The report shows that when the device is in an AfterFirstUnlock (AFU) state, rebooting results in reverting back to a BeforeFirstUnlock (BFU) state, making digital forensics much harder. In a lab testing environment, iPhones with iOS18.0 communicated with other iPhones already powered on in the AFU state, sending signals that triggered a reboot after a period of time following device activity or offline network access. Tests saw multiple iPhones in the AFU state restarting in the digital forensics lab, including iPhones in airplane mode and one in a Faraday cage.

Research indicates that iPhones with iOS18 might be communicating with other devices in the AFU state, triggering the reboot. Even inside a Faraday cage, which blocks all signals, iPhone restarts still occurred, highlighting the complexity of Apple's security technology.

The report's findings raise concerns among law enforcement agencies, as they struggle to access crucial evidence on iPhone devices. Previously, law enforcement could bypass iPhone security measures using various techniques, such as specialized tools for extracting device data. However, the new security measures in iOS18 seem to render those methods ineffective.

The report emphasizes that this isn't the first time Apple has strengthened iPhone security. Apple has consistently enhanced iPhone security measures in recent years, escalating the relationship between Apple and law enforcement to new heights. However, these new security measures make digital forensics more laborious, raising concerns within the legal and law enforcement communities.

The publication of this report sparks discussions about the security of iOS18 and the ability of law enforcement to obtain evidence. In the future, law enforcement might need to develop new techniques to overcome these challenges, while Apple needs to consider how to provide necessary cooperation for law enforcement while protecting user privacy and security.
