Following Huawei's launch of the world's first tri-fold phone, the MateXT, in China, the tri-fold phone market is poised for a new wave of excitement. Chinese smartphone manufacturers like OPPO and Tecno have also showcased their tri-fold phone concepts, and Samsung seems unwilling to be left behind.
Recently, the US Patent Office published a patent for Samsung's tri-fold phone. The patent was filed in 2021 and only recently approved. Subsequently, rumors suggest that Samsung might launch a tri-fold phone next year, a possibility that is increasingly likely.
According to Korean media outlet ETNews, citing anonymous industry sources, Samsung plans to introduce a tri-fold phone next year. Development for the product is already underway, with design and release models expected to be finalized by the end of this month. Several informed individuals revealed, "Samsung Electronics has recently added a dual-fold foldable phone to its development lineup, and partners have also initiated development projects."
Samsungs tri-fold phone is anticipated to have a screen size of approximately 9-10 inches when unfolded, exceeding the size of the current Galaxy Z Fold by 2 inches. Similar to the Huawei MateXT, the phone will resemble a tablet when unfolded. However, there are noticeable differences between Samsung's tri-fold phone and the Huawei MateXT. Samsung's tri-fold phone employs an "inward-folding" design with two folds inward, in contrast to the MateXT's single inward fold and one outward fold. This design choice might stem from reliability considerations.
Samsung appears reluctant to miss this opportunity, as the niche folding phone market currently experiences enthusiastic interest from new players. Samsungs introduction of a tri-fold phone will further enrich the folding phone market, providing users with more choices. It will also intensify market competition and drive advancements in folding phone technology.
