Recently, Japanese private research firm MM Research Institute released a survey result indicating that the direct selling price of the 128GB iPhone 16 in 39 countries and regions worldwide is lowest in China. Japan ranked third.

MM Research Institute compared prices across the four models in the iPhone 16 series, converting them to Japanese yen using the latest exchange rates. Taking the iPhone 16 (128GB) with the lowest price as an example, the global average price is 147,026 yen (approximately 7,219 yuan), while the official China price starts at 5,999 yuan, which is over 1,200 yuan lower than the average. The domestic price in Japan is 124,800 yen (approximately 6,128 yuan), about 22,000 yen lower than the global average, ranking third globally, after Thailand and China.

It is worth noting that the iPhone 16 Plus 256GB is priced at 154,800 yen (approximately 7,601 yuan) in Japan, making it the second lowest globally, while the official China price is 7,999 yuan. Similarly, the iPhone 16 Pro 512GB and the most expensive iPhone 16 Pro Max 1TB are priced at 204,800 yen (approximately 10,056 yuan) and 249,800 yen (approximately 12,265 yuan) respectively in Japan, both ranking third globally, while they are 10,999 yuan and 13,999 yuan in China respectively.

Overall, the prices of these four models in Japan are on average about 35,000 yen (approximately 1,719 yuan) lower than the global average. Compared with the previous generation iPhone 15 series, the price of the iPhone 16 series in Japan has not become the lowest in the world, and the gap with the global average price has also narrowed by nearly 8,000 yen. Despite the fact that the lowest price of new iPhone models has been rising for four consecutive years, Japan's iPhones remain relatively cheap globally due to the depreciation of the yen. Apple has kept the price of the iPhone 16 series unchanged in Japan.

MM Research Institute's analysis also points out that "the higher the market share of iPhones in a country, the lower the proportion of the iPhone price in average wages." This year, Apple's latest iPhone 16 series has seen a decrease in popularity in the Chinese market, with some e-commerce platforms even offering discounts of up to thousands of yuan at launch.
