Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has previously reported that the Plus series currently accounts for only 5%10% of new iPhone shipments, suggesting that the other three models (standard, Pro, and Pro Max) effectively cover the high-end smartphone market, rendering the Plus series redundant. Therefore, Apple's iPhone 17 series will remove the iPhone 17 Plus model while introducing a new ultra-thin model. This means that the iPhone 16 Plus will be the last Plus model from Apple, and it will debut alongside the iPhone 16 series in September.
According to leaks, both iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will sport a dual-camera system with a vertical camera arrangement similar to the iPhone X. Apple's adjustment to the camera placement aims to enable the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus to support spatial video recording, paving the way for its VisionPro headset and other future products. When an iPhone records spatial video, its main and ultra-wide cameras operate simultaneously. The footage captured by the ultra-wide camera will be automatically adjusted to match the main camera's size, and the system will then merge the videos from both cameras after recording.
Apparently, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will retain a 48MP main camera with an f/1.6 aperture, providing 2x digital zoom through digital cropping. The ultra-wide camera, however, sees an upgrade in aperture, moving from f/2.4 in the previous generation to f/2.2. A larger aperture allows for more light in low-light environments, leading to improved nighttime performance.
