Recent reports suggest Apple plans to secure the first batch of production capacity for TSMC's 2nm process, potentially debuting the technology in its iPhone 17 Pro series, scheduled for release next year. According to sources, the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will be equipped with chips manufactured using the 2nm process, while the thinner iPhone 17 Air will continue using the 3nm process.

TSMC is set to begin mass production of its 2nm chips in 2025, with production facilities located at its Baoshan and Kaohsiung plants in Taiwan. Compared to the 3nm process, the 2nm process is expected to deliver a 10% to 15% performance boost at the same power level, or a 25% to 30% reduction in power consumption at the same frequency and complexity. Currently, TSMC is considering increasing the chip density by 15% for its 2nm chips, a significant advancement in the current industry standards.

The 2nm process utilizes an advanced nanosheet transistor structure, promising full-node advantages in performance and power efficiency, meeting the rising demand for energy-efficient computing. TSMC asserts that the 2nm process, along with its derivatives, will further solidify its technological leadership in the semiconductor industry, with the upcoming mass production of 2nm chips representing the most advanced technology in the industry in terms of density and energy efficiency.

This news signifies Apple's continued pursuit of leadership in chip technology, also foreshadowing TSMC's 2nm process poised to redefine the performance and energy efficiency standards for mobile devices. Future iPhone 17 Pro models incorporating 2nm chips will offer consumers enhanced performance and extended battery life, further elevating the user experience.

Beyond Apple, other technology giants have expressed considerable interest in TSMC's 2nm process. With the formal mass production of the 2nm process, it is anticipated to lead a new chip technology revolution and drive technological advancements across the entire semiconductor industry.
