iPhone 18 Pro Series May Exclusively Feature TSMC's 2nm Process, Delivering Significant Performance Gains
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 17 series will utilize TSMC's N3P process chips, while the iPhone 18 series will upgrade to TSMC's 2nm process chips. However, due to cost control considerations, not all iPhone 18 models will be equipped with the 2nm process. Apple only plans to implement it on the Pro series models.
As a core customer of TSMC for years, Apple has always been an early adopter of its advanced manufacturing processes. From 7nm, 5nm to 3nm, Apple has been among the first customers to utilize TSMC's new processes upon mass production. It is expected that this partnership will continue with 2nm. Multiple media outlets report that Apple has secured all of TSMC's initial production capacity for the 2nm process, demonstrating its commitment to this technology.
TSMC's 2nm process chips are expected to bring significant performance enhancements, with an estimated 10% to 15% increase compared to the current 3nm process. At the same time, power consumption is expected to decrease by 30%, providing users with a better battery life experience.
In addition to the 2nm process, Apple is also planning to follow up with the SoIC (System-on-Integrated-Chip) packaging technology and bring it to mass production. The SoIC technology vertically stacks multiple chips with different functionalities, forming a compact 3D structure to further reduce chip size, enhance integration and performance.
The application of TSMC's 2nm process and SoIC technology signifies Apple's continuous innovation and pursuit of excellence in the chip technology field. In the future, Apple will continue to collaborate with TSMC to bring users even greater performance and advanced technology experiences.
