On July 19, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) urgently reached out to Cellebrite, an Israeli digital intelligence company, to gain access to the gunman's phone data following a shooting incident involving former President Donald Trump. Sources revealed that the FBI encountered difficulty unlocking the suspect's phone on Sunday morning, prompting them to seek assistance from Cellebrite.

Cellebrite, an Israeli company that provides technological support to various US federal agencies, was contacted by the FBI. Agents were hoping to uncover the gunman's motive for opening fire at the rally in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, where Trump was wounded and a spectator tragically died.

Authorities identified the gunman as Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was fatally shot by security personnel at the scene.

The FBI's Pittsburgh office holds a license for Cellebrite software, which aids law enforcement in bypassing or identifying phone passwords. However, sources revealed that the software failed to unlock Crooks' device, as he used a newer Samsung phone model.

Faced with this challenge, FBI agents swiftly contacted Cellebrite's US team, which manages coordination with law enforcement and government agencies. Within hours, Cellebrite provided additional technical support to the FBI's headquarters in Quantico, Virginia, including a newly developed software.

It is noteworthy that the initial attempt to unlock the phone failed, and the unreleased software details had not been previously disclosed. According to reports, after updating Cellebrite's software, the FBI successfully unlocked the phone in just 40 minutes.

The time taken to unlock a phone can range from mere seconds to years, depending on the password's complexity. Cellebrite's software can access phones through various methods, including disabling the built-in limit on repeated password attempts and generating millions of password combinations for unlocking. The specific method used by the FBI to unlock Crooks' phone remains unclear.

Cellebrite, a Nasdaq-listed company, reported that approximately one-fifth of its public sector business focuses on federal clients. The company stated that its annual recurring revenue for the first quarter of 2024 reached $89.6 million and that it has processed over 5 million cases. Based on a statement released this week, the company is seeking to expand its operations within the US federal clientele.

Cellebrite has consistently addressed criticism from privacy advocates who see the use of this technology as unethical hacking. These advocates highlight the potential misuse of its technology by foreign governments to target activists. However, Cellebrite emphasizes that its software is exclusively used for unlocking seized phones with legal authorization and has never been employed for surveillance purposes.

This incident once again raises concerns about phone data security and privacy. As technology advances, the ability to unlock phones grows, providing law enforcement with enhanced tools to access information from criminal suspects. However, while pursuing security, the protection of citizens' privacy remains a crucial issue demanding careful consideration.
