Data released on Tuesday revealed a continued decline in Tesla's sales across major European markets in March, hitting their lowest point since the first quarter of 2021. This slump isn't a coincidence but the result of multiple converging factors, with Elon Musk's controversial political stances playing a pivotal role. The rise of strong Chinese competitors, coupled with Tesla's slow model updates and dwindling price competitiveness, further exacerbates its European struggles.

France and Sweden saw their third consecutive month of declining sales, with dramatic drops. March new car registrations in France totalled only 3,157, a year-on-year decrease of 36.83%; Sweden saw a mere 911 registrations, down 63.9%. While Norway experienced a relatively smaller decline of 1%, Denmark and the Netherlands suffered even more significant falls of 65.6% and 61%, respectively, with March sales of 593 and 1,536 units. First-quarter data is even more alarming, showing declines of 41.1% in France, 55.3% in Sweden, 12.5% in Norway, and 55.3% and 49.7% in Denmark and the Netherlands respectively.

Shrinking market share underscores Tesla's European predicament. In France, Tesla's market share plummeted from 2.55% last year to 1.63%, lost to Chinese electric vehicle brands including BYD, which now holds a 3.19% share. Although Spain and Portugal saw March sales increases of 34.3% and 2.1% respectively, their first-quarter sales still fell by 11.8% and 25.7%. Italy saw a 51.3% increase in March sales but a 6.8% decline in the first quarter.

This sales decline signifies more than just falling numbers; it reflects a shift in consumer perception of the Tesla brand. Quentin Willson, founder of FairCharge and a Tesla owner, stated: "No car brand has ever had such a spectacular global reputational collapse." He, along with many other owners, expressed concerns over Musk's political positions. Luca DelBo, president and co-founder of the Italian Tesla Owners Club, admitted: "We are very embarrassed. We all wish Musk would go back to being a focused CEO, then we would feel reassured."

Musk's close ties with US President Trump and his support for European far-right parties continue to fuel controversy and negative publicity. This negative image isn't confined to consumers; it has also led to vandalism targeting Tesla vehicles and dealerships. Violent protests against Tesla have occurred in Rome, Berlin, and Stockholm, resulting in dozens of cars being burned and showrooms vandalized. A fire at a Tesla dealership in Rome (destroying 17 cars), which Musk blamed on terrorism, further escalated tensions.

Beyond Musk's political stances, Tesla faces multiple internal challenges. Ben Nelmes, CEO of industry research firm NewAutoMotive, points out: "Tesla's weak European sales are a confluence of factors. The company has failed to develop competitively priced new models, and the CEO's involvement in US politics has alienated parts of the consumer base."

Tesla's model lineup is thin and slow to update, while established automakers and new Chinese competitors are aggressively launching cheaper, better-equipped electric vehicles, further squeezing Tesla's market space. Eric Schiffer, CEO of Los Angeles-based private equity firm Patriarch Organization, notes that while aligning with the right wing might be effective in the US market, a European strategy needs to better emphasize product value and market differentiation. He believes Musk's European strategy requires a significant overhaul.

Data suggests that Musk's support for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and other European far-right parties has directly harmed Tesla's sales on the continent. Protests urging a "take down of Tesla" have erupted across Europe and the US, with protesters directly targeting Musk and his political affiliations. Helen Wahlgren, spokesperson for Restore Wetlands under the A22 network in Europe, stated: "It's all about the company, Musk, and the politics he represents. It's about authoritarianism and totalitarianism."

Despite this, Tesla's stock price rebounded 6.8% in Tuesday's New York trading, starkly contrasting with its European struggles. This may indicate investor confidence in Tesla's long-term prospects, but the persistent European slump casts a shadow over its future. Analysts expect further clarification on Tesla's first-quarter global deliveries and brand recognition as sales data from Italy and other European markets emerges. Whether Tesla can overcome its European challenges hinges on its ability to effectively address market competition, brand image, and its CEO's political baggage. Future success requires comprehensive adjustments to product competitiveness, brand image, and public relations strategies. This necessitates not only improved product strategies but also more careful management of Musk's public image to prevent his political stances from further damaging Tesla's brand reputation.
