On September 12, Google co-founder Sergey Brin spoke at the All-In Summit in Los Angeles, expressing his surprise that Google engineers are not using artificial intelligence as frequently as he anticipated.

During a live conversation with entrepreneur David Friedberg, Brin stated that as a computer scientist, he had never seen such exciting technological advancements in recent years. He specifically highlighted the powerful capabilities of AI in programming, citing his own experiment of having a Google AI model write Sudoku code.

Brin found the AI model's successful completion of the task, including generating different types of Sudoku puzzles, remarkable. He explained, "Engineers haven't been using AI tools to write code as much as I thought they would."

Brin's remarks sparked a debate about whether engineers are truly embracing AI. While the emergence of AI programming tools has fueled concerns about future job displacement, Brin believes that unlocking the full potential of AI requires a willingness to take risks and embrace some "awkwardness."

He admitted that Google was overly cautious in releasing early language models because they made mistakes and occasionally uttered "embarrassing things." However, over time, Google has made significant strides in AI and has begun to proactively address competition.

To maintain its leadership in AI, Google recently updated its AI Overviews feature, capable of generating AI-powered answers based on searches. This move came weeks after OpenAI unveiled its competing search engine prototype.

However, despite Google's continued investment in AI, it has not been immune to talent poaching. In June, reports surfaced that OpenAI had poached at least 44 employees from Google, roughly half of whom were engineers.

Brin and Friedberg also explored the future of human-AI interactions and the race to create human-like AI during their conversation. The All-In Summit also featured speeches from other heavyweight guests, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Brin's comments have ignited a discussion about whether engineers are adequately harnessing the power of AI. While the emergence of AI tools has raised concerns about future employment, the immense potential of AI cannot be overlooked. Going forward, the effective application of AI and addressing the challenges it presents will be crucial issues for the tech industry.
