iPhone 16 Series Still Uses Qualcomm Modem, Apple's Self-Developed 5G Modem to Debut Next Year

Although the iPhone 16 series has officially launched, many users are still curious about whether the series uses Apple's self-developed 5G modem. Recently, TechInsights' teardown information revealed that the iPhone 16 series still uses the Qualcomm SDX71M modem and did not use Apple's self-developed 5G modem.

Despite not using a self-developed modem, the iPhone 16 Pro still saw improvements in 5G download speeds across the three major US carriers. Speedsmart's real-world test data shows that the model achieved up to 26% faster download speeds under 5G networks, with average download speeds exceeding 400Mbps.

iPhone 16 Series Still Uses Qualcomm Modem, Apple

While the iPhone 16 series still utilizes Qualcomm modems, Apple hasn't abandoned its plans for a self-developed 5G modem. Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed that Apple is aggressively developing its own 5G modem chip and plans to launch it commercially next year, with the iPhone SE4 being the first to feature it. Additionally, the iPhone 17 Air, slated for release in September 2025, will also be equipped with Apple's self-developed 5G modem.

The introduction of Apple's self-developed 5G modem will bring greater autonomy and control to the company, potentially leading to improved performance and power efficiency for iPhones. For users, this means a wider range of choices and the possibility of experiencing smoother and more stable 5G network connectivity in the future.
