On Wednesday, September 26th, OpenAI Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati announced her resignation, marking the end of her six-and-a-half-year tenure at the company. In a farewell memo to the company, Murati wrote, "After much deliberation, I have made the difficult decision to leave OpenAI. While there is never a perfect time to leave a place you cherish, I believe now is the right time." She also shared the memo on the social media platform X.

Murati is the latest top executive to depart OpenAI. Previously, OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever and former head of safety Jan Leike left the company in May. Co-founder John Schulman announced last month that he was leaving to join rival Anthropic.

In explaining her departure, Murati stated that she is "eager to make time and space to explore new areas." She added, "My immediate priority is to ensure a smooth transition and maintain the strong momentum we have built."

Shortly after Murati's resignation announcement, reports emerged that OpenAI is planning to transition to a for-profit business structure. While the company will retain its non-profit component, it will no longer be directly overseen by a non-profit board. Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will hold equity in the company for the first time. It remains unclear whether Murati's departure is related to OpenAI's restructuring.

According to sources, the restructuring is being discussed with legal counsel and shareholders with the objective of making the company more attractive to investors.

On Wednesday, Altman responded to Murati's departure on social media, writing, "It is impossible to overstate the importance of Mira to OpenAI, our mission, and every single person on the team. I am deeply grateful for everything she has done to build and grow the company, in particular her steadfast support and care during challenging times. I am excited for her next chapter."

With strong support from Microsoft, OpenAI has launched ChatGPT and SearchGPT. The company is currently in the midst of a new round of financing, with an expected valuation exceeding $150 billion. Sources indicate that Thrive Capital is leading the fundraising, aiming to invest $1 billion, with Tiger Global also showing interest. Additionally, tech giants such as Microsoft, Nvidia, and Apple are exploring investment opportunities.

Since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, OpenAI has experienced unprecedented growth but has also faced controversy and challenges. The frequent changes in top management have raised concerns among both current and former employees, who worry about the company's ability to ensure the safety and stable operation of artificial intelligence amidst rapid development.

In June, Murati addressed the potential impact of new AI tools on creative jobs at the Wall Street Journal's TechLive conference. During her on-stage remarks, she stated, "Some creative jobs will go away, but if they're creating content of low quality, they shouldn't be there in the first place. I believe that using AI as a tool for education and creativity can amplify our intelligence, creativity, and imagination."

Last November, OpenAI experienced a high-profile leadership shakeup when the board abruptly dismissed Altman and appointed Murati as interim CEO, catapulting her to prominence. In a statement at the time, the board claimed that Altman had not been "consistently transparent" in his communications with the board.

There were internal divisions within OpenAI regarding the direction of AI development. Sutskever and others focused on ensuring that AI would not harm humanity, while Altman and others prioritized advancing the technology. This dismissal sparked a major uproar both inside and outside the company, leading almost all employees to sign a joint letter threatening to resign in protest of the board's decision.

Just five days later, the situation reversed, and Altman returned as CEO, with Murati resuming her role as CTO. Subsequently, board members Helen Toner and Tasha McCauley resigned, while Sutskever was removed from the board but remained an employee of the company.

Murati's departure marks another significant transformation for OpenAI amidst its rapid development. The company is in a crucial transitional phase, actively raising funds and preparing to shift to a for-profit business structure while also facing challenges such as talent loss and internal ideological differences. How OpenAI addresses these challenges will be a key focus in the field of artificial intelligence.
