Ming-Chi Kuo, a renowned analyst at TF International Securities who has been tracking Apple's supply chain for years, recently revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will be the only model in the 2025 iPhone lineup to boast 12GB of RAM. All other models, including the rumored ultra-thin iPhone, iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and SE4, will retain 8GB RAM. Kuo believes that the 12GB DRAM will be an "exclusive" feature for the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and enhanced on-device AI capabilities will be one of its main selling points.
Besides the RAM upgrade, the iPhone 17 Pro Max will also see an improvement in its thermal management system. It will adopt a combination of a vapor chamber (VC) and graphite sheets, while other 2025 iPhone models will continue to rely on graphite sheet cooling.
According to Kuo's analysis, the Pro Max models currently account for nearly 40% of new iPhone shipments, representing the most significant contribution to Apple's revenue and profit. Therefore, Apple will continue its differentiation strategy of equipping the Pro Max with the most powerful specs, not only in terms of screen size exceeding the Pro models but also in hardware configurations.
Recently, several other leakers have also shared similar predictions about the iPhone 17 lineup featuring 12GB RAM. For instance, "Mobile Chip Master," a well-known mobile industry blogger, and the Korean forum meeco, have published similar forecasts. They argue that the iPhone 16 series, with its 8GB RAM, primarily targets cloud-based AI scenarios, while the iPhone 17 series will upgrade to 12GB to offer more robust on-device AI support.
