Xiaomi Surge OS 1019 Upgrade Test: Significant Fluidity Improvement, Faster App Launch Speeds
On August 14, 2024, Xiaomi Surge OS began a new round of OTA updates, with the primary focus on enhancing system base fluidity and significantly optimizing app launch times. The official statement claims that the latest version of Xiaomi Surge OS achieves almost 0ms response for third-party app cold starts.
So, does the latest version of Xiaomi Surge OS actually noticeably improve app response speeds? How much of an improvement is there compared to the older version? Below, we will verify this through real-world testing.
To clearly compare the changes after the upgrade to the new Xiaomi Surge OS, we prepared two Xiaomi 14 Ultra phones with the same configuration and model, one running the 1015 version of the old system and the other running the 1019 version of the new system, for a comparative test.
Before the test, we performed the following operations on both phones:
1. Factory reset.
2. Activate the phones and delete all pre-installed third-party apps.
3. Download 20 commonly used apps.
4. Connect to a Wi-Fi network.
5. All other settings are identical.
After installation, we opened all 20 commonly used apps on both Xiaomi 14 Ultra phones once to avoid any heat issues during testing that might arise from third-party apps needing to decompress in the background the first time they are opened. After opening, we cleared the background on both Xiaomi 14 Ultra phones, restarted them, and let them sit for an hour.
Test Results:
1. Single App Launch Speed Test:
We tested the new and old versions of the Xiaomi Surge OS system by randomly opening a single app and measuring the time from tapping the icon to the app fully expanding. After slowing down the footage three times, we can see that the new Xiaomi Surge OS 1019 version system launches individual third-party apps faster than the older system, with the app filling the screen while the older system is still animating.
2. Total Load Time Test for 20 Commonly Used Apps:
We tested the total time it took for the new and old versions of the Xiaomi Surge OS system to open 20 commonly used apps. The testing method involved clicking to launch a third-party app, returning to the home screen, and then launching the next app until all 20 apps were launched, recording the total time.
The test results showed that the new version of Xiaomi Surge OS took 21.16 seconds to open 20 commonly used apps, while the old version took 21.37 seconds, with the new system being 0.21 seconds faster, averaging a 0.1-second improvement per app.
3. Floating Window Feature Test:
In addition to the overall lack of fluidity, many users with Xiaomi phones running the older version of the Surge OS system often encounter a major problem during daily use, which is that the floating window often has bugs, showing abnormal display for video apps during horizontal and vertical screen switching, and the fluidity is a bit slow when enlarged.
The "Free Window" in the Surge OS 1019 system fixes the issue of abnormal display for video apps in the floating window when switching between horizontal and vertical screens. Additionally, our test shows that the floating window animation in the Surge OS 1019 system is more responsive and smooth when enlarged compared to the older system, with no lag when dragging down.
New Features and Bug Fixes:
In addition to improving system base fluidity, this new version of Surge OS brings several new features and bug fixes, such as:
- Added "Long Press Lock Screen Edit Style Switch" Feature: Addressing the issue of accidental touches when long pressing on the lock screen, the new version of Surge OS adds a "Long Press Lock Screen Edit Style Switch," which prevents the lock screen edit function from being triggered when long pressing while the screen is locked.
- CarWith Experience Optimization: As a system that emphasizes the interconnectedness of all things, this new version of Surge OS specifically optimizes the CarWith experience, adding updates to the CarWith visual experience, redrawing six types of horizontal and vertical car machine styles, including new map cards, music cards, and Xiao Ai voice interaction styles, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the interface.
- Added CarWith Personalization Features: Supports setting car machine wallpapers, changing background effects, customizing card sorting, adding widgets, and more.
Push Time and Covered Models:
Official information shows that the new Surge OS 1019 system will be pushed out in three batches:
- First Batch of August Upgrades: Xiaomi 14 series, Redmi K70/Pro/E, Redmi K60 Supreme Edition.
- Models Covered Gradually Throughout August: Xiaomi 13 series, Xiaomi MIX Fold 3, Redmi Turbo 3.
- Models Covered Gradually from Mid-September: Xiaomi Civi 4 Pro, Redmi K60/Pro/E.
Additionally, Xiaomi specifically stated that the Xiaomi MIX Fold 4, Xiaomi MIX Flip, Redmi K70 Supreme Edition, and Redmi K70 Supreme Champion Edition models will follow the upgrade rhythm of the new phones.
It can be seen that the new Surge OS 1019 system currently mainly adapts to Xiaomi and Redmi's flagship phones from the past two years. Users with mid-range flagship phones will need to wait a bit longer to experience the new version of the Surge OS system.
Summary:
Through comparative testing, it is not difficult to find that the latest version of Xiaomi Surge OS performs exceptionally well in terms of cold start times for individual apps, total load times for 20 apps, and floating window fluidity, significantly exceeding its predecessor. This improvement in fluidity undoubtedly provides users with a smoother operational experience.
Furthermore, Surge OS has made numerous improvements in terms of new features and bug fixes, such as the addition of the "Long Press Lock Screen Edit Style Switch" feature and the optimization of the CarWith experience, further enhancing the system's ease of use and convenience.
Looking at these experiences, we can see Xiaomi's continuous innovation and improvements in Surge OS. The upgrade in system fluidity not only increases user satisfaction but also demonstrates Xiaomi's relentless pursuit of user experience.
Considering that Surge OS 2.0 is already poised for launch, this fluidity upgrade to Surge OS may be just the beginning. We have reason to believe that Surge OS will bring more exciting features and optimizations in the future, continuing to lead the trend of intelligent operating systems. Let's wait and see how Xiaomi Surge OS will provide users with a richer and more colorful intelligent life experience with its exceptional performance and innovative features.
