On May 15th, IT Home reported that Microsoft recently replaced the Weather UWP application on Windows 11 with a web-based MSN.com weather webpage, according to Windows Latest.

PWA (Progressive Web App) is smaller and requires less bandwidth than traditional desktop or UWP applications, making it increasingly popular due to its ability to effectively use caching. However, switching to PWA resulted in advertising and significant performance degradation throughout the weather application.

After the update, previously ad free weather clients began displaying advertising banners, which affected free users and Microsoft 365 subscription users. Users are unable to accept "advertisements" in applications such as weather, and many users express outrage in the feedback center.

In response to the overwhelming feedback on social media and its feedback platforms, Microsoft has quietly decided to withdraw changes from the weather app homepage.

This means that users will no longer encounter banner advertisements when accessing the homepage of the weather application. However, during testing, it was observed that advertising content continued to appear on other Windows 11 weather pages, such as the forecast page and the life (health and safety dashboard).

The source stated that these advertisements will appear in all versions of Windows weather applications, including the Windows 11 and Windows 10 platforms. The source also stated that these advertisements will be based on interest, which means that users' MSN history cookies will be used to display personalized advertisements.
