Android Users More Eager to Upgrade, Apple's "Toothpaste" Innovation Leads to Consumer Hesitation
According to the latest report from market research firm CIRP, Android platform users are more active in upgrading their phones compared to Apple users. The report notes that 57% of Android users choose to replace their phones within two years, with only 21% using a phone for more than three years before upgrading. In stark contrast, Apple users exhibit a significantly higher phone "longevity." Only 34% replace their phones within two years, while a substantial 32% use their phones for over three years.
Foreign media suggests that the sluggish upgrade rate among Apple users could be attributed to Apple's "toothpaste-like" innovation. Last month's iPhone 16 series release saw sales significantly lower than its predecessor. Despite introducing a physical camera button and Apple's intelligent AI capabilities, the new features failed to spark consumer interest. From a consumer standpoint, iPhone 15 users don't feel a compelling need to upgrade, and iPhone 14 users seem content with their devices, finding little incentive to replace them.
For users in mainland China, Apple's intelligent features are currently unavailable. Consequently, iPhone 13 users also lack motivation to upgrade, as simply replacing the battery allows them to keep using the phone for another year.
In conclusion, Android users demonstrate greater enthusiasm for phone upgrades, while Apple users exhibit a wait-and-see approach. This directly correlates with Apple's recent lackluster innovation. To entice users to upgrade, Apple needs to invest more effort in future product development, introducing substantial innovations instead of merely tweaking existing products.
