On May 17th, IT Home reported that according to South Korean media TheElec, Samsung SDI is increasing its research and development efforts in electric vehicle batteries, developing solid-state batteries using sulfide electrolytes. The report also pointed out that,Samsung is planning to apply this solid-state battery to mobile devices such as smartphones.

Compared to mainstream lithium-ion batteries, solid-state batteries have many advantages, including the ability to store more energy than traditional lithium-ion batteries, and the ability to not catch fire when punctured. This means that solid-state batteries are safer than existing mainstream lithium-ion batteries.

Samsung is not the only original equipment manufacturer interested in developing solid-state batteries. Earlier this year, Xiaomi also claimed to have developed a working prototype of a smartphone powered by solid-state batteries.

IT Home previously reported that Samsung plans to apply the lamination technology used in the automotive battery field to the Galaxy S24 phone. This design not only improves safety, but also increases battery capacity by 10% under the same weight/volume.
