IT Home reported on May 29th that Japan and the Japan Aerospace Research and Development Agency (JAXA) have spent decades attempting to realize the possibility of transmitting solar energy from space.

In 2015, the country achieved a breakthrough when JAXA scientists successfully transmitted 1.8 kilowatts of electricity, equivalent to the energy required for an electric kettle, onto a wireless receiver more than 50 meters away. Now, Japan is preparing to take this technology further.

According to the Nikkei report, a partnership formed by Japan's public-private partnership will attempt to transmit solar energy from space as early as 2025. The project is led by Professor Naoku Shunhara of Kyoto University, who has been dedicated to space solar energy since 2009, and will attempt to deploy a series of small satellites in orbit. Then, these satellites will attempt to transmit the solar energy they collect to ground receiving stations hundreds of miles away.

The idea of using orbital solar panels and microwaves to send energy to Earth was first proposed in 1968. The reason why this technology is attractive is because orbital solar panels represent a potential infinite renewable energy supply. In space, solar panels can collect energy both day and night, and by using microwaves to transmit the electricity they generate, clouds are not a problem. However, even if Japan successfully deploys a set of orbital solar panels, this technology is still relatively distant. This is because to produce an array that can generate 1 gigawatt of power (equivalent to the output of a nuclear reactor), it will cost about $7 billion according to the currently available technology (Note from IT Home: currently about 49.49 billion yuan).
