Following its acquisition of the autonomous driving demonstration zone permit in Beijing, Pony.ai has now received approval from the Tianjin Municipal Commission of Transport, Tianjin Municipal Industry and Information Technology Bureau, and Tianjin Municipal Public Security Bureau. This cross-provincial autonomous heavy-duty truck demonstration application license allows Pony.ai to collaborate with Sinotrans to provide automated freight services on the Beijing and Tianjin sections of the Jingjin Expressway, marking a significant step towards cross-provincial autonomous logistics.
I. Scope of Approval and Test Section:
The total length of the Jingjin Expressway Beijing and Tianjin sections approved for autonomous driving testing exceeds 100 kilometers. Pony.ai's self-driving trucks will conduct tests on this cross-provincial expressway at speeds up to 90 kilometers per hour, with a safety officer seated in the driver's seat.
II. Previous Progress and Collaborations:
In July 2021, Pony.ai obtained the Beijing autonomous driving truck test permit and highway test permit. In December 2021, it successfully completed China's first public highway test of an autonomous truck. Pony.ai formed a strategic partnership with Sinotrans in December 2021 and established a joint venture, Qingzui Logistics Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Qingzui Logistics"), to jointly explore new models for the large-scale implementation of autonomous trucks. In September 2023, Pony.ai was authorized to launch an intelligent connected heavy-duty truck demonstration application in Beijing, providing demonstration freight services in real-world scenarios in collaboration with Sinotrans.
III. Test Mileage and Cargo Tonnage:
To date, the combined test mileage of Pony.ai and its joint venture Qingzui Logistics' autonomous trucks has reached nearly 4 million kilometers, with a total cargo tonnage of close to 20 million ton-kilometers. These tests have generated a vast amount of data and experience, providing crucial support for the continuous iteration and optimization of Pony.ai's autonomous driving technology.
IV. Future Outlook:
The acquisition of this cross-provincial autonomous heavy-duty truck demonstration application license represents a new milestone in the development of Pony.ai's autonomous driving technology. In the future, Pony.ai will continue to work with Sinotrans to provide regularized automated freight services on the Jingjin Expressway, bringing new impetus to the cross-provincial logistics industry.
Pony.ai's autonomous driving technology has broad application prospects in the logistics sector. As the technology matures, automated trucks are expected to become the future trend in the logistics industry, offering safer, more efficient, and more cost-effective solutions for freight transportation.
