Data released by research firm Canalys shows that global smartphone shipments reached 309.9 million units in the third quarter of 2024, representing a 5% year-on-year increase. This marks the strongest Q3 performance since 2021, driven by strong performance from various vendors, particularly the top three players: Samsung, Apple, and Xiaomi.
Samsung retained its top spot with shipments of 57.5 million units, demonstrating its robust market competitiveness. Apple, fueled by the strong performance of the iPhone 16 series, achieved a record-breaking 54.5 million units shipped, securing the second position. Xiaomi, benefiting from its new product inventory strategy in key markets, secured third place with 42.8 million units shipped and a 14% market share.
Beyond the top three, OPPO and vivo came in at fourth and fifth with 28.6 million and 27.2 million units shipped, respectively. Notably, Apple's performance in this quarter was particularly impressive, coming within a whisker of Samsung's top spot. This is no surprise given the typical iPhone peak season. Xiaomi demonstrated stable growth, closely trailing Samsung and Apple. Despite Apple's significant increase, Xiaomi maintained a small gap, securing its place in the top three and widening the distance from OPPO and vivo in fourth and fifth.
Currently, the three giants, Samsung, Apple, and Xiaomi, continue to dominate the global smartphone market, collectively holding a commanding 51% market share. Transsion, a previously strong Chinese brand, failed to secure a top five position in this quarter.
